"Every Shut Eye Ain't Sleep; Every Goodbye Ain't Gone," Part 1

Hello, everyone! Happy New Year!

I'm delighted to announce the impending publication of the book of blog essays, along with the impending launch of a new site that will take the conversation forward regarding lifestyle optimization for African-American women. We've already covered the basic survival issues here, it's time to take it to the next level.

At the new site, I'm moving forward from covering basic survival issues into detailed discussions of optimal living. In fact, there’s a science to lifestyle optimization that I’ll discuss at length at the new site. Many of the tips and techniques that I’ll discuss come from the relatively new field of positive psychology. Positive psychology is the scientific study of what enables individuals and communities to thrive.

Because I believe that Black women need new visions in support of sane and serene living, this new site will also focus on writing and the publishing industry. I know that many of you have at least one good book inside you, waiting to be born.

Black women need new visions. We need to hear new voices. We need to hear your voice in your own creative works. With the new site, I’m also dedicating myself to helping other African-American writers through what I’ve learned—and what I’m still learning—about writing and publishing during my adventures as a new author. I’ll let you look over my shoulder, and have the benefit of “hindsight in advance.” The benefit of learning through my ongoing experiences.

Let me give you a small sneak preview. The very first post (the sample post) for the new site is 5 Elements of Money-Making Nonfiction Books. It explains some of the details of why nonfiction writers who want to earn a good living for themselves and their families don’t need to have their books on the best-sellers lists.

Entrepreneurial nonfiction authors know the real money does not come from book sales. Instead, the real money comes from “back-end” sales of other products (audio programs, newsletters, videos, special reports, teleseminars, boot camps, speaking engagements, personal coaching) mentioned in the books.

There are still a few things to be worked out with the new site and the book isn't out yet, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when it's all ready. I hope to have everything ready by the end of January 2010. I'll put up another announcement here when the new site and book have launched. In the meantime, you can bookmark the following link: http://www.sojournerspassport.com/

See you soon!

Peace and blessings,
Khadija

  3. OMG! I am so frickin' excited to know you're back. I can't wait for the book of essays and the new site. You have been soooo missed. I just about fell over when I saw this blog post.

    Welcome back, Khadija.

  4. Hello there, Sweet Soul Sister,

Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it.

In fact, it was the support from you and other readers that convinced me to commit to the "convert the blog posts into a book" idea. [I'm not trying to heap more tasks onto myself these days. LOL!]

This outpouring of support also showed me that it would be worthwhile to continue my active participation in the online movement supporting abundant life for AA women. I just needed to do so in a format and manner that is sustainable for me over the long haul.

Even though I enjoyed it, the manner in which I had operated this particular blog took up waaay too much of my time. And I was already busy. Which is why I set an expiration date for the Muslim Bushido blog project.

However, I've streamlined several things, and hopefully the Sojourner's Passport blog project will be much more sustainable in the long run. I plan to keep it going for the long haul! LOL!

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

Glad to hear from you again! I've been haunting this blog the past few days because I remember you saying you would be back around the New Year. Looking forward to more online fellowship.

  7. Khadija:

I was just thinking how nice it would be to read a new blog post by you and - presto!! Your voice has been missed! I think we're all ready to move on now across the board. Since the attacks on black women have increased to the point where even some who would've ignored it before are starting to get it, things are at critical mass.

It's amazing to me how I recognize topics of conversation containing components of things you discussed here and seeing things click one by one by one. Some are getting it but others are just repeating the confused thinking of the indoctrinated.

We are truly at a time when we must separate the wheat from the chaff.

  8. Hello there, Lisa99,

Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it. Yes, big things are coming in 2010. In all sorts of ways, good and bad. AAs are at an inflection point. All sorts of tides are shifting, and the AA collective is at the end of days:

1-The final erasure of what little AA political empowerment we had. The ones we have in place now will be among the LAST of AA elected officials. [See the latest mayoral election in Atlanta. See the demographic shifts in favor of Latinos in major cities across the country like Los Angeles. Quiet as it's kept, there's been a similar influx of Latinos to previous AA population strongholds in the South.]

2-The final stages of the moral meltdown of the AA collective. We celebrate child molesters like Ar-ruh Kelly, and now Morgan Freeman (the "it's okay because she's not his blood granddaughter" excusers). This widespread, near-total lack of human decency among us will speed the physical demise of the AA collective through violent crime.

I'll take this opportunity to give a warning to Muslim readers. I've said this in the past, but it bears repeating:

In light of the Arab-American Army psychiatrist who allegedly shot up his colleagues, and the Nigerian Muslim who allegedly tried to blow up the plane on Christmas:

You need to figure out where you're going to run to if and when this country decides to start rounding up American Muslims.

I figure that we've got about 2 "successful" Muslim-committed terrorist attacks to go before the American government decides that it needs to do something about us as a group.

Don't wait until you end up like the Japanese-Americans before you start making preparations. NOW is the time to get a passport (if you don't already have one). NOW is the time to start saving some extra money for moving. NOW is the time to start learning the language of the country you might relocate to.

And NOW is the time to find out the residency requirements for anywhere you might want to relocate to. There's a very helpful book by Mark Ehrman called "Getting Out: Your Guide to Leaving America."

Don't wait until it's too late to start making preparations. Things can happen and change very quickly.

There are some other end-stage situations that I could mention, but we've already talked about all of that.

    Hello there, Faith,

Thank you for your ongoing support, as well as your outstanding work in support of abundant life for AA women and girls. I truly appreciate it.

Yes, I also believe that all sorts of things are at a critical mass. Those of us who will survive and thrive are parting ways with those who will die in the wilderness. As you noted, the wheat is being separated from the chaff.

And I 1,000% co-sign the recent analysis given by an astute commenter at your blog. Here's a big shout-out to Karen, who said:

"The majority will not be saved (they are too invested in what ultimately hurts them).

The challenge for the new decade is to “not look back”. For those that want a different life, all that can be done now is to support their efforts to join that life-giving path.

Last rites are already being conducted on the BC..."

She's absolutely right. The key is to NOT look back at Sodom as it implodes. It's time to MOVE FORWARD.

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  10. Since I gave one of my last geopolitical warnings to the Muslims, let me give another one to those (few) remaining AAs who have romantic ideas about some sort of African renaissance.

Forget about that. Stop wasting whatever time you're investing in those sorts of pursuits. The African continent is dying and will soon be totally dead for the Africans themselves. It will be particularly dead to those romantic Pan-Africanists among the AA population.

During my years as a Black Nationalist, I heard many such AAs talking about "going back" to the continent, forging business ties with Africans, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Again, forget about that. You weren't able to do it at any meaningful level while the Africans had some small semblance of control over their own countries.

You certainly won't be able to do this once the Chinese complete their takeover of any and all resources on the African continent. You need to start focusing your attention on building institutions right here in the US. In our own country---the country that our ancestors paid for with their slave labor and blood.

Those who are confused about this should read and research the following from the Global Guerillas blog:

    http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/

    Monday, 21 December 2009

    "JOURNAL: Shell Capitulates in Nigeria

'Royal Dutch Shell PLC is seeking buyers for 10 of its Nigerian onshore oil-production assets following years of militant attacks on its facilities that have squeezed the company's profit, people familiar with the matter said Sunday.

The oil fields have a market value of $4 billion to $5 billion and represent proven oil reserves of about 100 million barrels, one of the people said... The move marks a capitulation of sorts for Shell. Wall Street Journal.'

[The GG blog author commented:]This a great example of an open source insurgency's effectiveness against a massive multinational corporation. What was the decision making process at Shell regarding this threat? Why was the company so ineffective at defending it's interests? A good forensic analysis would be useful (I'd like to see how it matches up against theoretical approaches re: attacking corporations).

An astute commenter at the GG blog replied:

    CelticDragon said...

The likely outcome is that Shell sells to the Chinese, they bring in their own security as part of the deal, and the insurgency ends, violently..."

    _________________________________

Yep, this is how it will go as the Chinese take over ALL of Africa’s natural resources.

Those AAs who are still Pan-Africanists need to wake up and smell the coffee.

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  12. Dang dija preach girl I hear you on that african chinese thing about them taking over I saw that coming years ago. Most of those african leaders couldn't stand to hook up with blacks here cuz they thought they were too good for us but look at them now about to loose their country to communist and marxist, they only have themselves to blame while selling out the continent.
As far as AA in politics here in the US when they had the promise to make some good changes for everyone most of them reverted to ole boy politikin and shuckin and jivin trying to hang on for re-election without making any real changes or they complained about every so called wrong against every black miscreant to go to jail instead of saving their power to really push legislation that counted. Most of them had some sort of sex scandal or other.

  13. Hi again, Khadija! I was just pacing around and preparing to once again sift through the archives when I saw this post! I've already bookmarked the new site and look forward to learning more.

Faith is right: the collective certainly has reached critical mass. And Karen couldn't have described things more succinctly. I was at my stepparents' house for Christmas and thinking to myself "uh, most of these women and girls really aren't going to make it, and I know I can't save them all." again, good to see you back. :)

  14. Hello there, Bellydancer,

Well, I believe that people (including AAs) have the leadership that they tolerate, and therefore deserve.

The Chinese takeover of the African continent (aided and abetted by corrupt African leaders) is not my problem. That's something for Africans to sort out. Or not. It's up to them.

In terms of AAs, we also blew it. The past few decades were our last, best hope for making ourselves competitive with the other people that flock to this country. We wasted that opportunity, and now AAs are sinking into permanent underclass status in this country.

That's a battle that has already been lost. What's left is for the survivors to take it a step further and learn how to thrive.

  22. Hello there, Oshun,

Thank you so much for your kind words and ongoing support; I truly appreciate it!

About the bestseller thing: What I find so fascinating is how LOW the real numbers for "official" success as a traditionally-published author are in terms of books sold.

Dan Poynter (who's the granddaddy of self-publishing; he's been around for decades and he's done very well with his how-to books) cited the following statistics on his site:

"A successful fiction book sells 5,000 copies.
    --Authors Guild. http://www.authorsguild.org/

A successful nonfiction book sells 7,500 copies.
    --Authors Guild. http://www.authorsguild.org/"

    http://bookstatistics.com/sites/para/resources/
    statistics.cfm (emphasis added)

I've read blogs by traditionally-published fiction authors where they give numbers like 10,000 books sold as being very good numbers! Very interesting.

The bottom line is that only laypeople outside the traditional book industry are measuring success by "bestseller" status. The traditional publishing professionals aren't using bestseller status as the only metric of success.

And this is with the traditional publishing industry---folks who are only looking to get their money from book sales.

Entrepreneurial authors---who are focused on using the books as brochures to sell more expensive products such as:

    1-audio & video presentations,
    2-personal coaching,
    3-subscription newsletters, etc.

can make more money with less book sales!

Let me use the first Rich Dad, Poor Dad book as an example of this:

The original Rich Dad, Poor Dad book---which was originally self-published before a major traditional publisher picked it up---costs $16. The CashFlow 101 board game that Mr. Kiyosaki mentions in the original book costs $195.

I’ve seen a video clip where Mr. Kiyosaki mentions that he wasn’t focused on selling the first book as his ultimate goal. He was focused on getting some of the readers who bought the first Rich Dad book to also buy his more expensive CashFlow educational board game. [It's easier to sell to existing customers who have already bought one of your products than to brand-new customers.]

It's fair to say that Mr. Kiyosaki was making a lot of money with the book because of backend sales of the CashFlow game mentioned in the book LONG BEFORE the book became a bestseller.

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  24. Hello there, Southland Diva,

You're welcome, and THANK YOU for your kind words and ongoing support; I truly appreciate it!

Oh yeah, 2010 will definitely be a good year. I'm well rested after a 2-week vacation that I got back from a week ago.

I had already decided to do my own "Great Disconnect" starting today, New Year's Day. This means that I'm only going to pay attention to those online conversations that are of actual use to me. Most of which don't involve too many Black folks at this point. Over the past few months of my online "radio silence," I've come to see just how nonproductive and time-wasting 99% of Black blogs are.

Black folks are spending all their online conversation time talking about (1) things they can't do anything about, (2) things they won't do anything about, and (3) utterly useless things (Solange Knowles' haircut, etc.).

I had already drastically cut back on my intake of Black blogs. Starting today, on New Year's Day, I'm going to stop reading 99% of them.

Instead, I've started to immerse myself in the writers' blogs. Which tend to talk about actionable ideas and tips. I've also been doing a lot of reading and research to help with my side business, and the marketing of the book.

I had already more or less stopped watching tv (after all, Battlestar Galactica already had its series finale---LOL!). I had already stopped reading the newspapers or watching the tv news. I haven't missed any of it.

I've found that I've been so much more productive over the past 3 months of semi-disconnect from the internet. I'm looking forward to The Great Disconnect.

Onward and forward for us all in 2010!

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  25. Hello Khadija

    Welcome Back
You were so correct on black women finding escape routes and alternatives lifestyles. I knew it years ago and slowly re-adjusted myself. Now I can actually say that I am a divested black woman.LOL
I have been accepted to an online masters program in Sweden. I start my class in two weeks. I will travel to Sweden twice a year for three years for my residency. You see I was listening to you and others about escaping the matrix. Girl I already have one foot in Sweden and now I have get the other out too.LOL I have my passport and will apply for an entry visa in a few months for study in October.
Sisters if you want to study in SWEDEN,FINLAND or NORWAY do it now because the Europeans are not going to offer Free Tuition for too long. In Sweden they have a proposal to charge int'l student in 2011. It may/will pass the Swedish parliament soon. Time is of the essence for Sweden.
honey I made announcements to friends and family and most were happy for me. Also on some of the BWE blogs I received private messages from BW who want to leave too, but they are so mentally blocked. I sent them the links but that is all one can do.

  26. Hello there, Sistrunkqueen,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D That's wonderful news! I'm always delighted to hear about another sister who's being all she can be, and getting all she can (legitimately) get out of this world and this life.

Yes, as you've noted, the prison gate is wide open. Too many AA women are standing around in the prison yard for no real reason other than their own trapped mindsets.

May God bless you for giving the links and other information for study abroad opportunities. That's all you can do. To quickly summarize the old saying: Horse. Water. Drink. As an astute commenter noted at another blog, the challenge for the next decade is for surviving AA women to go forth into abundance and NOT look back at "Sodom."

Again, congratulations and best wishes for your travels and future endeavors!

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  27. KHADIJA!

i LOVE you sis!!! welcome back!

when i read your words, at times it feels like you are in my head. lol!

as the new year came in, i sat with my son, now 17 and urged him to consider that he is at the crossroads of his journey. the day is rapidly approaching where it will be my teachings, and his discipline and wisdom that will carry him. i urged him to embrace the fact that the name of the game is survival of the fittest.

as we spoke, i asked him if he remembered the nature programs he loved so much as a little boy? he acknowledged that he did and shared with me that he is still an avid fan...he just has less time to indulge.

we shared a good laugh as i explained to him that WE live in the animal kingdom. lol!

after he had gone to bed, i realized that i had come to a place of acceptance. those that choose to survive and thrive...will. my commitment is to move forward...powerfully.

i look very much forward to the next leg of the journey.

    blessings to you in abundance,

IT WASN'T INTENTIONAL, BUT I GOT SO BUSY IN SCHOOL LAST SEMESTER THAT I JUST DIDN'T HAVE TIME. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW MUCH TIME I WASTED READING INFORMATION THAT WAS USELESS TO ME IN MY JOURNEY TOWARD AN ABUNDANT LIFE. I HAVE COME TO REALIZE THAT TIME IS SO VALUABLE AND THAT MOST PEOPLE WASTE IT. ONE OF MY PROMISES TO MYSELF IS THAT I WILL GET IN CONTROL OF MY TIME.

I WISH YOU A HAPPY, PEACEFUL, AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. I FEEL THAT THIS YEAR WILL BE A GOOD YEAR FOR ME AND I HOPE THAT IT WILL BE ONE FOR YOU.

Sis, THANK YOU so much for your kind words and ongoing support; I truly appreciate it! As I've mentioned to you before, you're one of my blogging role models.

You said, "i urged him to embrace the fact that the name of the game is survival of the fittest." That's absolutely correct. AAs in general, and AA women in particular, have the mistaken belief that somebody (else) is going to take pity on us and come riding to the rescue.

NO. Help is not on the way for those BW and children living in Black residential Rwanda-zones. Nobody came to rescue Blair Holt or Derrion Albert. There won't be any rescue for any of the denizens of the now-dead Black community.

And it's now time for those of us who hovered near the edge of these places and sounded the alarm for AA women to flee to MOVE FORWARD to other pursuits. I've moved on. At this point, let the dead bury the dead.

You said, my commitment is to move forward...powerfully. i look very much forward to the next leg of the journey."

I feel exactly the same way! :D

    Hello there, Tasha!

Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it!

Yes, time is a precious and FINITE resource for humans. AAs waste far too much time. It's a large part of the reason why we tend to be reactive and not proactive. All of which helps keep our collective monolithically at the bottom of most quality of life statistics.

I look at how, over the span of 15 or so years, large numbers of Mexican men have gone from using a single lawn mower to cut grass in Black residential areas to having landscaping businesses. I marvel at the nonblack street fruit vendors who have progressed to having brick and mortar produce grocery stores in various Black neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, most AAs persist in the troll behavior pattern of being spectators who do nothing except sit around discussing and critiquing what others are doing. Meanwhile, time marches by.

Yes, it was a blessing in disguise for us both to inadvertently disconnect from most internet forums.

Wishing all the Sojourners the best for 2010 and beyond!

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  30. Hello! Happy New Year!

I was talking with my mother about how 2010 is going to be interesting. There are a lot of things on the horizon and I've pretty much divested mentally from the BC. I cut up my credit cards and I'm now fiscally getting myself as ready as fast as I can so I can physically divest.

I walk around and I don't even feel the same pain I used to when I see the neighborhoods I grew up in because, honestly, unless I'm with a BW who's seeking guidance in divesting, I can't bring myself to focus on my surroundings. The minute you focus on what's trying to poison you, you're done. Unfortunately, the economy is stagnant, I can't find another job outside the job that was trying to suck the life force out of me. So I'm still in the much better situation but its a good, clarifying place that is showing me what I need to do and where I need to be once my physical divestment meets my mental divestment.

  31. Hello there, KM,

Happy New Year! Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it!

Yes, 2010 is the year when large numbers of AA women will begin to visibly divest from all sorts of non-reciprocating, unproductive people, places and things. Including divesting from the dead and non-reciprocating BC.

A lot of AA women have already quietly and discreetly escaped. But I think that for many BW, the previous emotional taboo against openly talking about these things has been dispelled.

I would still advise a measure of silence and secrecy for most BW who are still in the process of escaping at this point. There are too many crabs in the barrel who would love to have a chance to sabotage other Black folks' escape into abundance.

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

You said, " I definitely want 2010 to be a better year than 2009; I'm ready to make that happen."

I firmly believe that, with clarity and effort, 2010 will be a breakthrough year for many BW! The year that, when looking back, many AA women will say that this was the year their lives took a sharp turn into full-spectrum abundance. The key point in your comment is that you're ready to do your part to make that happen. That's critical.

Too many of us are passive bystanders . . . to our own lives! The new site is for those AA women who are ready to work in support of their own breakthroughs.

I'll be working on some projects that I'll discuss with the audience as I go along. My expectation is that audience members will also be using some of the ideas discussed in support of their own goals. There's no more time for idle chatter. Onward and forward!

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

Stealth is a VERY good thing when executing one's escape plan. It's wise of you to keep mum about what you're doing. There are too many spiteful crabs in the barrel.

Anyhoo, that's great news about your guest-blogging! I'm always happy to hear about more SANE AA women adding their voices to the mix.

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

I am glad to see you back. Maybe writing is a true love for you. And, they say true love will never die!

    Peace Khadija!

  40. Welcome Back ! I look foward to buying your book. I hope you make it easy for us leaving outside the US to purchase it. I know it's geared toward African American women. but we can all learn from what you know!

Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it! Yes, at this point I feel much more interested in writing than my "official" profession. We'll see what happens! *Smile*

    Hello there, Zindzhi,

Thank you for your ongoing support; I truly appreciate it! The book will be available at Amazon.com (and if I remember correctly, Barnes and Noble online also). And I believe they (both) ship products overseas.

Even though I generally focus on the specifically AA manifestations of certain pathologies, many of these same problems extend throughout the African-descended diaspora. Sometimes in slightly different formats, or with somewhat different points of emphasis.

The thing is, I'm not qualified to speak at length about how these same problems are manifested in other places because I'm not intimately familiar with the history and internal dynamics of other Black ethnic groups. I try to stick to what I know. *Smile*

    Peace, blessings and solidarity.

  42. I missed your wisdom so much. Thanks for coming back! I can't wait to get your book. I might buy more than one copy but I'm not sure if I'd be casting pearls before swine if I gave it to some of my extended family.

    Peace, blessings, and solidarity.
